Is your honey raw/unprocessed/heat treated?
All of our honey is locally sourced and is completely raw and unprocessed. There’s no heat used at any point during the extraction process, and if it does crystallise (as all raw honey will), it is gently warmed
to return it to its liquid state. The honey is strained as part of the extraction process to remove any pollen/dirt from the hive/bee parts – however, you may still find a fine layer of wax on top.
My honey has crystalized – is it no good/how do I fix it?
All natural honey will crystallise at some point. It’s still perfectly ok to eat – in fact, some people prefer ‘crunchy’ honey. Some honeys will crystallise quicker than others, and putting it in the fridge will speed up the process.
To uncrystallize your ‘crunchy’ honey, you can leave the container out in the sun for a day or so – if it’s a hot day, it may only take an hour or so to return to its liquid state. Or you can partially submerge your honey container in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water until it
reliquefies.
If you want to maintain all the goodness of your honey, DON’T use the microwave to ‘melt’ it – you’ll cook all the benefit out.
Do you sell bees?
Yes, we do. We sell everything you need to get set up with your first hive. You can buy either 5 frames of bees (known as a nucleus hive or nuc), or you can buy 10 frames of bees. Regardless of which option you choose, you will get a well established colony with a proven queen. The colony
will have several frames of brood, good food stores, and a bit of room to grow.
I’m a raw beginner – if I buy a hive, will you help me get it set up?
Absolutely - we can answer any questions you might have, help you find the perfect spot to set your hive up, and if needed, come out and do a quick inspection once they’re settled to make sure everything is tracking
along well.
My hive swarmed – what do I do?
If you know where the swarm is, find a box to put them in, pop your suit on, and haul them out of whatever spot they’ve landed in. If you can, try and locate your queen – once you’ve got her in a clip, or straight in the hive, you’ll have a much better chance that the swarm will stay.
You’ll also need to go and have a look inside your brood box to find out why they left – they might be out of space, or maybe there’s a disease. Keep an eye on the hive over the next couple of weeks to make sure they successfully requeen. If no action is taken to fix the problem, the hive
will likely continue to swarm until the colony collapses.
Do you offer classes/lessons?
We don’t offer lessons or classes, but you can book in a session with us to either have us come to you and go through your hive with you – teaching as we go, or you can come to our apiary and jump in on one of our inspections and learn as you go.
Do you sell native bees?
No, we don’t, but we know some people who do. Contact us and we’ll happily pass on their numbers.
I’ve never kept bees before - when is a good time to buy bees?
Spring and early Summer are always a good time to start – there’s generally plenty of flowers coming out, and it’s not too wet yet.
Can you really just turn a tap and get honey?
We don’t sell the Flow Hives, which offer the option of turning a tap to get honey. The hives we sell have standard frames in them, and in order to get the honey out, you’ll need to use a more traditional method.
Do you sell timber hives/components?
No, we don’t sell timber hives. We are the registered resellers for the plastic Nuplas hives and the polystyrene HiveIQ hives.
Do you only offer collection in Mareeba?
We offer collection from multiple locations. Our main collection point is 11 Dawson Rd, Mareeba, but we can also organise for products to be available for collection in Atherton, Tolga, Malanda and Cairns by
appointment. We’ll just need a day or 2 warning to ensure the products are there. We also offer collection from the Yungaburra and Malanda markets – You’ll need to have your order placed by noon on the Friday before.
