🐝 Who’s Buzzing Behind Bee’s Knees?
Bee’s Knees Honey is a small, family-owned business located in Mareeba, Far North Queensland. Glen and Emma took over the reins in 2023, relocating the business from Malanda to Mareeba to begin a new chapter in the sunshine and dry heat.
Our journey into beekeeping wasn’t planned — it just kind of happened. Back when we had no interest in bees at all, Glen’s mum asked if she could keep a hive on our place, since she didn’t have the space at her own. Glen would help her with the odd inspection, but Emma kept her distance. No matter how much Mum tried to get us involved — buying suits, gifting honey, sharing quirky bee facts — it didn’t stick.
🍯 And suddenly, we were That honey family
Then everything changed. Mum got sick and needed someone to look after her hives. Glen asked Emma to help “just this once”... and she reluctantly agreed. One inspection later, and something clicked. Watching the bees work in perfect harmony, the smell of warm wax and honey, the sheer wonder of it all — Emma was hooked.
From there, everything snowballed. We found ourselves harvesting honey, adding more hives, buying more gear... and before we knew it, the bees had completely won us over.
Now, our backyard is buzzing with 19 hives, the shed is full of beekeeping gear, and we’ve somehow roped in Mum and the kids too. It’s a bit chaotic sometimes — juggling a business, full-time jobs, volunteer work, and two small children — but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
